Rotary-Wing Flight Mechanics

چکیده

A helicopter is not possessed of an ability to fly fast compared with fixed-wing counterparts. This is a result of considerations with the main rotor. The main rotor moves in a direction very close to its plane of rotation which naturally divides it into two halves which operate under different aerodynamic conditions. One side (called the advancing side) has the rotation and translation velocity contributions adding together whilst the other (called the retreating side) has them subtracting – see Figure 1. This becomes more influential as the forward speed increases and the rotor has two principal problem areas

Aerodynamic Sensing for a Fixed Wing UAS Operating at High Angles of Attack

The flight profile of typical small unmanned air systems (UAS) has expanded in the last decade beyond those encountered by traditional fixed-wing transport and rotary-wing aircraft. These new flight conditions may involve unusual flight mechanics as with flapping wing flight or complex aerodynamics when performing difficult maneuvers as part of routine operations. Such scenarios typically invol...

Modeling and Control of a Dragonfly-like Micro Aerial Vehicle

The purpose of this research is to model and control a dragonflylike flapping wing micro aerial vehicle (FWMAV). It is well known that micro aerial vehicle (MAV) designs can be classified as fixed wing, rotary wing and flapping wing. Fixed wing MAV is capable of fast forward flight, which is suitable for flying outdoor. Rotary wing MAV is suitable for movement at low speed. Recently, flapping w...

Wildlife Strikes With Military Rotary-Wing Aircraft During Flight Operations Within the United States

Wildlife–aircraft collisions (wildlife strikes) with civilian and military aircraft pose notable risks and economic losses. The 4 military services within the U.S. Department of Defense maintain records regarding wildlife strikes with military aircraft. Although rotary-wing aircraft operations comprise important mission components within all 4 military services, no assessment of wildlife strike...

Rotary-Wing Aeroelasticity: Current Status and Future Trends

Concise Perspective and Previous Surveys W HEN reviewing research in rotary-wing aeroelasticity (RWA), it is important to mention a few historical facts. The Wright brothers flew in 1903, and Sikorsky built and started flying the first operational helicopter, the R-4 or (VS-316), in 1942. The R-4 was a three-bladed helicopter with a rotor diameter of 11.6 m and was powered by a 185-hp engine. T...

Adverse events during rotary-wing transport of mechanically ventilated patients: a retrospective cohort study

INTRODUCTION Patients triaged to tertiary care centers frequently undergo rotary-wing transport and may be exposed to additional risk for adverse events. The incidence of physiologic adverse events and their predisposing factors in mechanically ventilated patients undergoing aeromedical transport are unknown. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of flight records of all interfacility, ...
